Rebecca Anderson
Rebecca is currently an MA candidate in the Literature of Modernity program at Ryerson University. While completing her Honours degree in English Literature at Concordia University, she held an editorial position for the Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies in Sexuality and held an executive position on the English student association. During her MA, Rebecca hopes to continue studying the greatly unexplored world of women’s life writing from letter correspondence to the contemporary feminist memoir.
Matthew Blenkarn
Matthew Blenkarn is a student in the Literatures of Modernity M.A. program at Ryerson University. He earned a Bachelor of Journalism from Carleton University (2013) and has extensive experience with both digital and print publishing. His interests range from avant-garde art and literature to popular film and beyond.
Robin Daprato
Robin is currently an MA student in Literatures of Modernity at Ryerson University. In her undergrad at WIlfrid Laurier University she was a double-major in English and Sociology and minored in Medieval Studies. Her research interests include: 19th Century Children’s Literature, Monstrous Bodies, Medievalism, and Fairytales and Fantasy. More specifically, her research has focused on how resistive physical bodies that reject oppressive norms are often rendered monstrous. Currently, she is researching the representation of exotic animals in a series called “Zig-Zags at the Zoo” in The Strand.
Erin Della Mattia
Erin is a writer, editor, and MA candidate in the Literatures of Modernity program. Her research interests include 19th century literature, children’s literature, depictions of the child in fiction, and creative writing. She is currently the Managing Editor of the online magazine Sewer Lid, and has previously been a member of the editing teams for White Wall Review, Existere, and Descant. Her creative work is forthcoming in her imagination.
Kelly Duval
An MA student in the Literatures of Modernity program, Kelly Duval completed her undergraduate degree in English Literature and Creative Writing at Concordia University. Her research interests include Victorian Literature, women’s writing and contemporary poetry and fiction. Regarding modernity and the visual, her current research project is focused on advertisements depicting women in The Strand.
Lorraine Janzen Kooistra
Professor of English at Ryerson University, Lorraine has been fascinated by image/text relations and print culture since her grad school days. Her research in modernity and the visual is currently focused on late-Victorian periodicals and their digital remediation. She is co-editor of The Yellow Nineties Online.
Lauren Matera
As an English MA student, Lauren is currently studying the many facets of modernity within the contexts of literature and culture at Ryerson University. Previously an intern for the White Wall Review and fiction section head editor of Ryerson Folio Magazine, Lauren has a background in editorial and publishing. Her research interests include 19th and 20th century periodical studies, the fairy tale and fantasy genres, creative writing and poetry studies.
Colleen McDonell
As a MA Literatures of Modernity student at Ryerson University, Colleen is interested in exploring 19th and 20th century folk and fairy tales. She is currently involved in research projects on late-Victorian horror (Arthur Machen), children’s literature and innocence, and motherhood. Her favourite fin-de-siècle periodical is The Evergreen: A Northern Seasonal.
Paula Razuri
Paula Razuri is a student and writer living in Toronto. She is currently enrolled in Ryerson’s MA for Literatures of Modernity after having completed her BA from The University of Toronto in English. She will be working on a digital remediation project in Winter 2016 focused on The Evergreen. Her areas of interest include photographic rhetoric and eroticism in Canadian literature, and among many other future ambitions she hopes to someday develop expert skills in paper-folding.
Phoenix Simms
Phoenix is currently an MA student of the Literatures of Modernity program at Ryerson University. She is currently working as a research assistant for the “Texting Wilde Project.” Her research interests centre around digital narratives and visual culture as they relate to video games and graphic novels. Previously a fine arts student with a focus on art history, Phoenix is fascinated with the pre-Raphaelite period, which might explain why she emphasized the Byam Shaw illustration in her digital magazine page.
Kathryn Stagg
Kathryn is an MA student in Ryerson’s Literatures of Modernity Program. Prior to Ryerson, she completed her BA at the University of Toronto, with a specialist in English. Her interests include 20th century British and Irish Literature, with an emphasis on gender, and crises of identity related to trauma. In her current research, Kathryn is interested in the intersections between modernism and gender discourse in fin-de-siècle magazines.
Tanya Tan
Tanya is currently an MA student and research assistant in the Literatures of Modernity program at Ryerson University. After receiving her undergraduate degree at Ryerson, with a major in English and a minor in Professional Communications, Tanya completed several editorial internships and worked as a freelance writer for various print and digital publications. Her research interests include studies in performance, gender and visual culture.
Jose Juan Carolos Tuason
Carlos Tuason is an MA candidate in the English Literatures of Modernity program. English is his primary language, but not his first. As such, he is preoccupied with seeing language as a transitional or liminal. The study of image and text relations in fin-de-siècle periodicals satisfies certainly this. His favourite is fin-de-siècle periodical is The Dome .
